How often do you maintenance your PC?

Anti Virus

Malware Protection - the fancy term for anti virus software. Finding the right protection for your PC can be tricky as all anti-virus programs are not created equal. It's not easy to determine which software lends the best possible performance when you have no idea what to look for. With each one claiming to be the best and some have been around for so long what is an unsuspecting PC user to do?

I had to devote a whole page to anti virus protection for those who think they are all the same or to those who assume that because some brands are the name you know, they are the best. This is an untruth I have been doing my best to correct for quite some time. In fact, it is my contention that some of the newer brands are far more intelligible when measured up against todays technology.

When purchasing a malware program here are some key aspects you want to look for:

1. Size of the program - the larger the program the slower your PC will run

2. FREE programs- my grandmother use to say, "everything that glitters isn't gold" or "you get what you  pay for". Usually the free stuff is lacking some of the major components needed to keep your machine truly error safe.

3. Support - can you get support on the phone without having to call half around the world?

4. Ease of Use- how "user-friendly" is the interface of the program. Are the advanced features, if any, easily navigated?

I could go on and on with things to look for in a program, believe me after working in tech support for so long I have heard all types of system issues that were lots of times closely related to the type of anti virus protection the individual was using. So without further ado, I have listed my recommendations below.

ESET Smart Security - Save 25%

ESET Smart Security 4.0 Free Trial

My favorite hands down. I don't care what anyone says and I won't change my answer. I haven't  tried them all, but I have tried a great number of them and this one by far out ranks in my book. The program is small. It actually speeds up the computer. It's all inclusive; meaning, when you have this program, you don't need anything else...PERIOD. It's interface is very user friendly and it offers the strictest protection. Heck most of em will give you a free trial, but that's still a benefit, none the less.

Now AVG offers a free version of their software and in most cases it works just fine, however, you run the risk of firewall issues because as I stated before, the free versions usually are missing some components of the software that are key. You can very well use the free version at your own risk, but with so many trojan virus' and spyware being created nowadays, who wants to take the chance. I would upgrade immediately if you are using that one.

So there you have it. My recommendations for anti virus. I won't recommend anything I haven't first tried myself. I have used both of these and I like them both. ESET is my new favorite until something new and/or better comes along. There's no loyalty in the PC world, lol.
